Rating: pg Spoilers: none Keywords: X-Files / My so-called Life crossover. Summary: Angela and her friends are having a squirt gun shoot out competiotion. Meanwhile Mulder and Scully visit some zoos to take a look at some black oil found on the animals... 104.1 a so-called x-file, part 1 SCENE 1 Exterior zoo. A group of 11/12 year old kids is walking through the zoo with a teacher and a zoo keeper, wearing an overall. They stand still in front the polar bear area. Two bears are swimming in the water, one is lying in the shade of a rock. Text appears: Pittsburgh Zoo, Pennsylvania. June 10, 11.15 a.m. The kids are wearing shorts and t-shirts. From their faces we see it's very hot. Then we see Danielle in the middle of the group. A girl with blond short hair is talking to her. The teacher tries to get their attention. TEACHER: Kids, listen up. Mr. Perry is going to tell us something about the polar bear. Mr. Perry - the zoo keeper - gets in front of the kids. And they half-heartedly pay attention. Perry obviously suffers from the heat, but tries to tell something interesting to the kids. PERRY: As you know, this weather is not normal for the polar bears. [pauses] Neither is it for zoo keepers. No one laughs. He continues talking, but the sound goes down and we can't hear what he's saying anymore. CUT to Danielle. She whispers something in the blond girl's ear. DANIELLE: I got to go to the bathroom. BLOND GIRL: [whispering too, pointing] There's a sign. I think you could sneak out for a minute. Danielle looks at the sign. There are symbols for toilets, restaurant and exit on it. They're all pointing leftwards. DANIELLE: [whispering] O.K. I'll be right back. She leaves the group, without being seen by the teacher or the zoo keeper. She walks a lane, looking around for more signs. DANIELLE VO: [some what irritated] Field trips can be so intense. The teacher who thought of going the zoo at 95 degrees must have a real sick sense of humor. I bet it was miss Kudrun. [pauses] I guess field trips to the pool are like forbidden. By law. She reaches the toiletbuilding pretty fast. She gets in the ladies room and enters a stall. As she closes the door, she looks on the floor and sees some brown oil on it. As she looks further she sees more small oil spots. They are also on the low placed cistern. She touches the oil. It's thick and sticky. She tries to rub it off, but that doesn't work. She only spreads the little bit of oil more over her fingers. Danielle sees the cistern is not closed to well and tries to open the lid. She succeeds and when she lifts the lid, she sees a transparent plastic bag in it. It's one that can be closed waterproof. She gets it out and then we see it's some kind of gun. It's weird one, we see it has some kind of reservoir on top of it. As Danielle looks carefully and amazed at the gun, the door slams open and Danielle gets the scare of her life. She turns around and faces an older man in a suit, in his right hand he's holding a burning cigarette: it's the Cigarette Smoking Man a.k.a. the Cancer Man. ** Maybe a little digression is in place here. For everybody not too familiar with the X-Files: the Cigarette Smoking Man is a somewhat mysterious person with big control. He' about sixty years old, always wearing suits and he is always *always* smoking a cigarette or going to light one. Mulder and Scully don't know his name or who he is. He is always called the Cigarette Smoking Man (CSM) or in X-Philes jargon: the cancer man. He is part of a group of big people who covered up a lot of important stuff, like the proof for existence of alien life forms. In short: he's trouble and he is evil. Murder is not a big problem for him. He always stays behind the scenes and 'plausible deniance' is his magic word and his life credo. Mulder and Scully are sometimes blocked in their investigations by him (directly or indirectly), because he has the power to stop them from investigating stuff. Whenever he appears something really bad is going on.** The CSM looks at her in a nice way, but Danielle is still frightened. He speaks to her in a nice but strict voice. He points at the plastic bag with the gun in Danielle's hands. CSM: I was just looking for that. Why don't you give that to me. Danielle hesitates but after a few seconds she hands the plastic bag to him. The CSM smiles a little. Danielle's fear goes away, but she's still nervous. DANIELLE: [fast] Why did you just come in? Couldn't you wait for a moment? CSM: Well, how could I know you were in here? The door wasn't locked. [pauses, then more strict] I'd suggest you'd get back to the others, before they are going to miss you. DANIELLE: What's in the bag? CSM: It's a tranquillizer gun. Some kid stole it this morning and I have been looking for it for two hours now. DANIELLE: Wow. CSM: We'd better keep this our little secret. Danielle looks up at him and frowns. DANIELLE: Why? CSM: I don't want people to find out that kids can steal guns at the zoo. Danielle looks like she's not buying this crappy line. CSM: [very strict voice] Let's just say you're gonna regret it if you talk about this. Then he drops his cigarette, turns around and walks away. Danielle closes the door and locks it. She stares at the still burning cigarette on the floor, looking scared and tired. Then she quickly turns around and throws up in the toilet. Fade to black. SCENE 2 Exterior Liberty High. Angela is sitting on the steps near the entrance. She is leaning against the little wall. Some MSCL music is playing. She's wearing jeans, a white t-shirt and red all stars. A small blue water gun is lying in front of her. The sun is shining. Text appears: Liberty High, Three Rivers, Pennsylvania. June 10, 1.15 p.m. Some people are walking down the steps. ANGELA VO: It seems that this year the only thing I really tried was to grow up as fast as I could. [pauses] And I guess I succeeded. Angela sighs. She picks up the water gun and holds it to the sun, to see how much water is left in it. Then she holds it in front of her, closes one eye and points it like she's gonna shoot. After a moment - without shooting - she puts it down again. ANGELA VO: Of all the people I hang out with I'm the only one who's still fifteen. A couple of months ago, I would have considered that as a problem. But now, when I think about it, I kind of like the idea. As soon as Angela has said the last words, Rayanne appears screaming from behind the low wall. She's holding a red water gun and shoots it at Angela. Right in her face. Angela doesn't reach for her gun. They both laugh. Angela gets the water out of her face with her hand. She goes through her hair. RAYANNE: [breathing heavily] I got you, Angeleeka. Angela: But that's just the first time. Rayanne gets a piece of paper out of her back pocket. She unfolds it and gives it to Angela. Angela takes it and we can read part of it. It says: THE WORLD HAPPINESS SHOOTING LIST. Under that are is list of names. We see Rayanne Graff, Rickie Vasquez, Brian Krakow, Sharon Cherski, Angela Chase. RAYANNE: Sign here, please. Angela signs behind her name. Angela: [surprised] You shot Rickie *two* times. RAYANNE: Yeah. But that was completely his fault. He tried to shoot me this morning, but he missed and I didn't. Same thing just ten minutes ago. [pauses] I mean, he's good at surprise attacks, but he's a lousy shooter. Angela: Sharon almost shot me right after Katimski's. But I saw her coming and managed to get away. [pauses, hands the paper back] Don't you think we're being really immature? RAYANNE: Yeah, isn't it great? Angela smiles and gets up. At the same time they put their guns under their t-shirts, between their backs and their jeans. Really gangster like. RAYANNE: [fast] Quick. Duck. Brian's coming. They get down behind the wall. A couple of seniors walk by and look disapproving. SCENE 3 Interior Chase kitchen. Graham gets a can of ice tea out of the fridge and pours four big glasses full. Patty comes in. She's looking sweaty. PATTY: You wouldn't believe how hot it gets at the print shop. She takes a glass and drinks half of it in two seconds. GRAHAM: [quasi angry] Patricia! Where are your manners? PATTY: [tough voice] My manners melt at 90 degrees. Angela comes in and walks to the sink. She gets her gun from under her shirt and fills it. Then Danielle runs in. She has a water gun too. PATTY: No shooting in the house. Angela turns off the water. Angela: I can't promise that. PATTY: What - DANIELLE: [to Angela, excited] So, tell me again. You have to shoot each other three times? Angela gets a glass of ice tea and takes a sip. Angela: [to Graham] It's really good, dad. GRAHAM: Thank you. DANIELLE: *Angela!* Angela: Yes! But it has to be a surprise attack. And when you miss, the other has a chance to shoot back. But you can only shoot one time. DANIELLE: Cool! PATTY: [strict voice] What is going on? What are you talking about? Angela: The World Happiness Shooting. PATTY: [astonished] The *World* *Happiness* *Shooting*? [calmer] Who thought of this? Angela: Well, Sharon wanted to do something with the heat wave. To cool everybody down, or something. But she couldn't think of anything. [takes another sip] And then Rayanne thought of this. [looks at Patty] It's just water, mom. And we don't shoot in class. DANIELLE: What does the winner get? Angela: I don't know yet. It's a secret. PATTY: But I don't see why you can't promise not to shoot in the house. Angela: Well, Brian is in it too. He could sneak in and shoot me. GRAHAM: *Brian* sneak in? PATTY: [sighs] I guess I should hang up some "Demilitarized Zone" posters on the doors. [pauses, to Danielle] So how was your trip to the zoo? Danielle looks up, a little frightened, but recovers fast. DANIELLE: [casual] O, it was fun. It was way too hot of course and all the animals were like dead from the heat. But miss Brown bought us all ice cream and that was really nice of her. Angela: Danielle, she didn't buy that herself. The school pays for that. DANIELLE: Duh! I know that. But it *was* nice. Angela: I wish Liberty'd give away free ice cream. [pauses, starts to walk away, looks at Patty, smiling] Mom, I think you should some of those DMZ posters on the windows too. You know how clever Brian is. PATTY: [shouting] Aargh!! [irritated] If I catch Brian sneaking in this house through whatever entrance, I'll make sure he wishes he had remembered just how clever he actually is. Angela, Danielle and Graham look at her with stunned faces. GRAHAM: [to Angela] Honey, I think you'd better make sure Brian doesn't even think about coming near this house today. SCENE 4 Interior shooting practice space. We hear shots and then we see Scully with yellow plastic glasses and ear protection. Text appears: FBI Headquarters, Washington D.C. June 10, 4.30 p.m. She is shooting at a paper human target that's about 60 feet away. After some shots she pushes a button and the human target moves toward her. She takes the glasses and the ear protection off. The target shows six holes in the heart area. Then Mulder appears behind her. MULDER: Pretty good. SCULLY: [sighs] If good shooting could solve cases, we'd probably have a higher succes rate. Mulder gets in the shooting line next to her and puts on the ear protection and the glasses. He gets out his gun and shoots it five times. When the target comes back, we see a perfect X on the body. Scully looks at it and frowns. Mulder takes of the glasses and the ear protection and looks at Scully. MULDER: Succes rates and X-files don't get along too well. Scully nods. They start to walk away. MULDER: Do you like zoos? Scully looks at him, surprised. SCULLY: Well, when I was young I did. I have never been to one since I was fourteen, I think. Why? MULDER: I want to show you something. They walk away. Cut to F.B.I. basement. Mulder opens his office door with a key. They enter and he shuts the door. His desk is cleaned up. Scully sits down in a chair. Mulder picks up some newspaper clippings and hands them to Scully. She goes through them. Then she looks up to Mulder. SCULLY: And? MULDER: Notice any similarities? SCULLY: Yes. Of course. In different zoos - Washington, San Francisco, Chicago - big animals die of some fever. Nobody can explain the fever. MULDER: And in all the three cases, some oil-like substance was found on the sick animals. SCULLY: So? MULDER: We've seem oil-like substances before, right? SCULLY: You think - MULDER: I don't know *what* to think. But I guess we're going to the zoo tomorrow. SCULLY: It's probably some unknown bacteria in their food or something. And the substance some physical secretion. MULDER: [agitated] Elephants, lions and gorilla's don't eat the same food. SCULLY: [looking bored] Allright. I'll come with you. [pauses] I am just thrilled to see the zookeeper's reaction. Two F.B.I. agents asking about their dead animals. MULDER: We'll see how surprised they are. SCENE 5 Interior Angela's room. Angela is sitting in front of her mirror. She's pulling faces, trying to look cool and tough. On one side of the mirror we see the UFO/"I want to believe" post card and Scully's F.B.I. card attached to it with a paperclip. [Angela got these in PARAZONE, take a look at the postcard]. Rayanne says something from off-screen. RAYANNE: I really think these are better. Angela turns around. Rayanne holds a yellow water gun to her. RAYANNE: Look. It's a little bigger, can contain more water and it shoots further. Rayanne aims it at Angela and then around the room. Angela: Cool. I take it. How much do I owe you? RAYANNE: One fifty. [pauses] I guess Jordan is not playing along, right? Angela: [laughs] Of course not. Imagine that! [more serious] Besides, he's not coming to school this whole week. Residue is playing at that festival this friday night. And they are supposed to play for half an hour, which means they have to rehearse a lot. [pauses] I don't mind. While Jordan's not around, I can completely donate my time to shooting up my friends. RAYANNE: And you don't have to explain to him. Angela: [sighs] That's right. But I think he'd understand. [pauses, changing the subject] I can't believe even Brian has joined. RAYANNE: Well, since he haemorraghed, he has definitely loosened up. It turned out good for him. Angela: [lightly shocked] *Rayanne!* RAYANNE: Yeah, yeah. I know. It was a horrible experience and all, but it's behind us now. It's been over two months, I think I can start to make the first jokes on it. [pauses] And besides, I ment it in a nice way. Angela: You're right. [pauses] But nearly every night I think about it. The moment that man's face was just like three inches away from mine. [pauses] That was scary. Angela remains silent and stares through the window. RAYANNE: You think I could get something to drink before I leave? Angela looks up from her thoughts. And gets up. Angela: Sure. Let's go down. Angela walks through her door. Rayanne follows with the two yellow guns in her hand. RAYANNE: Don't forget your gun! SCENE 6 Interior Liberty High hallway. Text appears: Liberty High. June 11, 9.30 a.m. People are walking. Sharon stands at her locker, looking around. Then Kyle comes to her. Sharon looks not too thrilled. Kyle: [smiling] Hi. SHARON: Hi. Kyle: I am happy for you that the shooting is such a succes. SHARON: [agitated in a Sharon way] *Are* you? Then why, just tell me why, you and your jock friends were telling all around school that it was just some stupid idea of me and Rayanne Graff. Immature, childish et cetera? Kyle: *I* didn't say that. SHARON: O. Then why didn't you join? Huh? Nearly all the sophomores joined. We had to divide everyone into five poules, that many people joined. Your girlfriend organised it. Give me one good reason not to join. [pauses] Like right now, Kyle. Kyle: [thinks of an excuse] Well, I don't like having to watch my back all the time. SHARON: Yeah, that's one hell of a reason. Then out of nowhere Angela appears and shoots Sharon right in the face. Angela: [nearly out of her mind] Gotcha! Then she sees Sharon's dripping unhappy face and Kyle's disapproving look and she gets quiet. Angela: [excusing voice] Oops! Sorry that I interrupted. [to Sharon] I guess you'll sign later? Then she walks away fast. Rayanne is waiting for her at the end of the hallway. They laugh. Cut back to Sharon and Kyle. Sharon dries her face with her arm. Kyle: Well, that was fun. Friends going insane. Another reason not to join. SHARON: Just shut up, Kyle. This is all your fault. She gets a red water gun out of her locker. The bell rings. Then she slams her locker door and goes where Angela was going to. Kyle is left in surprise. On the other side of the hallway we see Brian and Rickie. Rickie is just closing his locker. RICKIE: So, Brian, why did *you* join. No offense, but the shooting isn't much like you. BRIAN: Yeah. That's right. [pauses] I think of it as an experiment. RICKIE: [frowning] What kind of experiment? BRIAN: Well, you know, to learn about my abilities. See, I know that I am good at things like calculus, physics, computer, that kind of stuff. But I am starting to realize that that's not all that matters. I think the shooting thing is about action and reaction. It has to do with pratical solutions for practical problems. [pauses] What about you? RICKIE: I also see it as an experiment. BRIAN: [surprised] You do? RICKIE: Yeah. To see if the commercials are right about my new waterproof eyeliner. They both laugh. RICKIE: Besides that, I wouldn't dare to miss something called The World Happiness Shooting. BRIAN: And we finally get the chance to shoot everybody without going to jail. The second bell rings. Brian and Rickie hurry away. SCENE 7 Exterior zoo. Mulder and Scully stand in front of the elephant space. There are three big elephants and a small young one. Text appears: Washington Zoo, Washington D.C. June 11, 10.15 a.m. SCULLY: [dreamy voice] Melissa and I always loved the elephants the best. [pauses] They're big, but friendly. MULDER: [mildly sarcastic] Yeah, especially with their tusks cut off. SCULLY: Didn't you have a favorite animal in the zoo? MULDER: I always liked bats the most. And the fish. I loved those huge aquariums. Footsteps can be heard and Mulder and Scully turn around. In front of them is a blond, young woman, about 28, wearing an overall. She looks a little nervous. ALISON: You are here about the dead elephant? SCULLY: Yes. We're agents Scully and Mulder, we're with the F.B.I. ALISON: Wow. F.B.I. [pauses] I'm Louise Alison. I am the zoo's main elephant caretaker. Please come with me. I'll show you the inside accomodation for the elephants. CUT to interior elephant accomodation. They are standing in a hallway with fences for the elephants. The accomodations are filled with straw, but the elephants are all outside. ALISON: Here is where Imana died. MULDER: Was she old? ALISON: No. She was thirteen years old and never sick. She was the strongest of them all. SCULLY: The paper said that you have no reasonable explanation for her death. ALISON: That's right. When we noticed she wasn't feeling well, we put her apart from the others. We examined her and only found a fever. We assume that she died of the fever. SCULLY: Assume? ALISON: When we took her temperature it was slighly higher than normal. But every our it increased a little more. When she got 104.1 degrees she died. But that's not too high. It sure is a fever, but we only consider fevers real dangerous when the temperature reaches 106 or 108 degrees. It wasn't *that* bad. MULDER: And what about the oil? ALISON: We found the oil on her face. It was like someone had thrown a cup of it to her face. But it wasn't really oil. It looked like it hard hardened or something. Like it was real fluid before and had now turn to something more think and stickier. MULDER: Do you have something of that left here? ALISON: Yes. It's in the laboratory. Cut to interior laboratory. Mulder, Scully and Alison stand aside, while a woman in a white coat is reaching in some sort of fridge for a testtube. She gives it to Scully. LabwoMAN: Here it is. SCULLY: Thank you. Look, it's completely hardened now. [to labwoman] Can we take this? LabwoMAN: Yes, that's o.k. We've got three more tubes of it. SCULLY: Thank you. MULDER: [to Alison] What happened to the elephant? ALISON: After we did an autopsy and couldn't find anything, we assumed the fever caused his death. And then they brought it to the incineration. SCULLY: Is that standard procedure? ALISON: No. Normally we keep the dead bodies for further research, or for training vets. But the director was afraid for mysterious virusses and insisted on destruction of the body as fast as possible. Cut to exterior zoo. Mulder and Scully walk by some large bird cages. Then Alison comes running after them. They stop. She hands them a videotape. ALISON: I totally forgot. We made a videotape from Imana's last hours and from the autopsy. On the tape you can see the oil like it was before it hardened more. SCULLY: Thanks. ALISON: [little nervous] Why did you come here? [fast] I know I'm not supposed to ask this. But could you tell me anything? Did someone kill Imana? MULDER: Do you think that? ALISON: I don't know *what* to think. But I think the oil caused the fever and her death. The lab couldn't find out what it was. Can you? SCULLY: Maybe. MULDER: I'd just make sure that the other test tubes can't go for a walk. [pauses] Or that anybody can come and take them for a walk. SCENE 8 Interior F.B.I. lab. Scully is there with a well known lab guy. He's looking in a microscope. Then he looks up. LAB GUY: Well, it looks familiar to the other stuff. Some kind of chemical reaction caused the oil to crystalize. It was probably the contact with air. SCULLY: The oil is by no chance an secretion of the elephant itself? LAB GUY: No. This stuff can't be a product of a living creature. It contains a little lead and some other things I can't determine right now. Somebody threw it on the elephant. [pauses] I am going to do some more tests on it, but that will take a lot more time. Call me tomorrow. SCULLY: O.K. Thanks. Scully walks away. CUT to Mulder's office. He's just putting his phone down. Scully enters. MULDER: All the animals had a temperature of 104.1 when they died. SCULLY: And the oil looks familiar to the one we found before. MULDER: So, we've got oil on big dead animals that looks the same as the oil we found on a so-called submarine, but what we know is a shotdown U.F.O. SCULLY: Which is hidden in a silo that doesn't exist. [pauses] If this is what you think it is, somebody probably is going to call Skinner pretty soon. Someone knocks on the door. Mulder and Scully look up and there stands assistant director Skinner. Skinner: I already got a call. [pauses] What were you doing in the zoo? Don't you have something serious to do? MULDER: Well, sir, since you know we actually were at the zoo, I think it was serious what we were doing. Skinner: That elephant died of some sickness. And even if it *was* killed, it's not our business. We're the F.B.I., not Ace Ventura Inc. Mulder and Scully suppress a laugh. Then Scully looks serious. SCULLY: Sir, we have reasons to believe that the oil found on the elephant has something to do with the UFO cover up. Remember the silo and the submarine? Skinner: Of course I remember that, but I think you're making connections that are way too far fetched. Maybe the heat is getting to both your heads. MULDER: You know that's not true. You are *here* about our far fetched connections. Skinner: I am here to tell you to let this case rest and do something worthwhile. And that's not just a suggestion. Skinner turns around and walks away. Mulder and Scully watch him walking down the hall. SCENE 9 Exterior Liberty High. Rayanne is walking over the bleachers to the top, while she's walking she's looking for something in her bag. She doesn't see Brian who is sitting already on the highest bench. Brian puts his book away and gets a red water gun out of his backpack. Rayanne is still 15 feet away. He aims and shoots her in her neck. Rayanne looks up as soon as she gets hit and then tries to dry her neck with her hands. As she talks she reaches Brian. RAYANNE: [sighing loud] O, man. How can you shoot me from such a distance? Don't tell me you built your own precision squirt gun? She sits down beside him. BRIAN: [serious] Well, you know, my parents bought me this gun like eight years ago. I guess it was my father. He probably wanted me to develop my masculine aspects more. But I never played with it. [pauses] I never played with cars either. RAYANNE: [laughing] I can't imagine you playing with whatever toys. BRIAN: Well, I *did* have a huge amount of Lego. RAYANNE: Yeah, I bet you had. [pauses] So the gun didn't help much, right? BRIAN: What? RAYANNE: As to develop your masculine aspects more. BRIAN: [a little embarassed] You could say that. [pauses, looks at the gun in his hand] But it sure comes in handy now. RAYANNE: They don't make 'em like that anymore. [pauses] Let me sign your paper. Brian gets out his one time folded piece of paper and hands it to Rayanne. She looks at it and sees it's completely blank. RAYANNE: Well, it sure is an honour to be your first victim. She signs it and gives it back. RAYANNE: But you got to work on this, Krakow. I got five already and everybody is getting better with the hour. Brian puts the piece of paper back. BRIAN: Some how I can't bring myself to shooting other people. It is *so* unlike me. I never did anything like this since I was ten or something. [pauses] Not that that is of any interest to you in any way. RAYANNE: Give me break, Krakow. [pauses] You got to loosen up more. I discussed this with Angela - BRIAN: [shocked] What? You and Angela discussed *me*? Like when? And *what* did you discuss? RAYANNE: Pfff, relax. [sighs] The other night I was at the Chase's and we discussed you as being part of the shooting. *We* also thought it was unlike you. [pauses, reaches in her bag] But see it as a step forward. If you can completely surrender yourself to the shooting and not worry about school for one week, you'll find yourself a much happier, up person than ever. [gets two lolly's out of her bag, looks up to Brian] Want one? BRIAN: [overwhelmed by her advise] O.K., maybe you're right. Maybe I should not worry about school since it's too hot for that. Obviously *I* am not gonna get left back this year. [sighs] But you know I can't just sneak up at Angela Chase and shoot her. Not in this universe. RAYANNE: Come on, Krakow. Of course you can. And it's legal. You are not going to get many chances like these anymore. Exploit them. Rayanne looks around and sees Angela coming up the bleachers. RAYANNE: [whispering to Brian] Like right now. Get down fast, today is your lucky day. BRIAN: [irritated] Shut up. Brian gets his backpack, gets up and walks down the bleachers. Rayanne's POV. Halfway he meets Angela. Angela: Hi. BRIAN: [still irritated] Hi. That's all they say, Brian keeps walking. Angela gets up to Rayanne. She sits down, where Brian sat just a few moments ago. Rayanne gets her sunglasses out of her bag, puts them on and lies down on the bench. Angela: [frowning] What did you say to him? RAYANNE: That he should loosen up more. [pauses] And that it's totally and completely o.k. for him to sneak up at you and shoot you right in the face. Angela: [mouth openened wide in surprise] Did you really say that? RAYANNE: Yeah. And if I were you I should be really cautious, 'cause he's bought his squirt gun in Libia. Angela: Yeah right. [pauses] Did he say more about me? RAYANNE: [surprised, gets up and lifts her glasses] What? Why would you want to know? Angela: [sort of excusing herself] Well, it just seems that Brian and I are not good at being friends. I mean we talk sometimes in the bus and stuff, and we are not yelling at each other anymore. I actually like being around him most of the time. But it's just not the same as with you or Rickie or Sharon. RAYANNE: [lies down again, serious] What did you think? I mean, he has definitely loosened up, since he shot me without apologizing. But he still *is* Brian Krakow. You can't change such a thing just like that. Angela looks down. She gets an apple out of her backpack. Then she lies down on the other bench and closes her eyes. SCENE 10 Exterior Chase house. Graham is standing on a ladder painting the window frames of Angela's room. He's wearing shorts a t-shirt and a baseball cap. In the roof gutter, just below the window, is a stereo that's playing "Rockin' in the free world" by Neil Young. Graham is singing along: "That is one more kid that'll never go to school. Never get to fall in love, never get to be cool. Keep on rockin' in the free world." The Chase station wagon pulls up the drive way and Patty gets out. She is surprised that Graham is painting. She walks to the ladder and looks up at Graham. PATTY: Honey, aren't you dying up there? GRAHAM: [looking down] Well, I heard that with every one thousand feet you climb, the temperature goes three degrees down. So, actually it's pretty cold up here. [pauses] No, I'm fine and the paint dries amazingly fast now. PATTY: It's great that you're doing this. I'll get you a soda. GRAHAM: Thanks. Patty enters the house. It's a bit dark in the house, all the curtains are closed. She sees Danielle lying on the couch, sleeping in front of the t.v. The t.v. is on some news channel and it's just showing a weather chart. The sound is turned off. The chart shows temperatures of 100 degrees and plain sun for the coming days. Patty sighs and turns the t.v. off. Then she kisses Danielle on her hair and walks to the kitchen. CUT to Patty and Graham sitting in front of the house drinking both a can of coke. GRAHAM: It really needed to be done. Especially Angela's window. And I took a day off from the restaurant. PATTY: You could also just be reading a book in the backyard under a parasol with your feet in a bucket of cold water. [pauses] What's with Danielle? GRAHAM: I think the heat is too much for her. When she got home she looked a little pale. She wanted to lie down on the couch and fell asleep right away. PATTY: I hope she's not going to be sick. That's terrible just now. [pauses] You know my parents are coming over for dinner tomorrow, right? GRAHAM: [disapproving] What? PATTY: [faint smile] I knew you would shut that out. Then Danielle enters from inside. She's wearing a white baseball cap that's a little too big. She looks sick. She's got a glass of water and sits down by Patty and Graham. PATTY: [concerned] Honey, how are you feeling? DANIELLE: Not too good. PATTY: [like she's really talking to a five year old] Shall I make the little pool for you in the backyard? DANIELLE: *Mom!* I'm out of kindergarten, right? PATTY: [realizing that] O honey, I'm sorry. GRAHAM: I think you should take your temperature. You may have got a sunstroke. DANIELLE: I'm just tired with the heat. That's all. Angela comes walking up to them. Angela: [to Danielle] Saw a ghost? DANIELLE: Shut up! PATTY: Angela, Danielle is not feeling too well. So you might be just a little nice to her. Angela: Sorry. [short pause] I'm going up to my room. If I sit here I'm to easy a target for Brian. PATTY: [sighing] Just how long is this shooting going to last? Angela: Just till friday. Why? PATTY: Never mind. Angela walks away. SCENE 11 Interior parking garage. It's dark in the garage. A thrity-ish man is leaning against a red car. He's wearing a brown leather jacket. He obviously is waiting for someone. A grey car drives to him and stops. The Cigarette Smoking Man comes out. As he walks to the other man he gets a Marlboro box out of his pocket and lights up a cigarette. CSM: [strict] What happened? MAN: [little nervous] Somebody followed me. I had to hide. CSM: Why did you hide the gun? MAN: [angry] What do you think? If they'd caught me *with* the gun, I couldn't have pulled another stupid excuse. CSM: You spilled the liquid on the bathroom floor. A little girl saw it. She also found the gun. I was there just in time. MAN: Did she touch it? CSM: I don't know. But I'm sure she's not gonna tell anybody about what she saw. MAN: [angry] What? You - CSM: No. I didn't. But you are going to watch her. If she gets sick, you will tell me right away. We already *got* noticed. The CSM gives him a piece of paper and a photograph. And a little metal box. CSM: Here is her name, her address and a photograph. [pauses] Just watch her. Find out if she's sick and then contact me. [pauses] I'll tell you more about the box later, if it's necessary. Don't srew this up. The CSM walks back to his car, gets in and throws the cigarette through the open door window. He pulls up. The other man looks at the photograph, it's a picture of Danielle and the blond girl from her class. Danielle's head is circled. SCENE 12 Exterior Chase house. It's near dark. Lights are off in the Chase's living room. The ladder is still leaning to the house near Angela's window. Her window is open and the light in her room is burning. We see Brian walking -trying not to be seen - to the ladder. When he gets to it he looks around and then he starts to climb the ladder. BRIAN VO: I am *not* doing this. I am not climbing up a ladder to Angela's room trying to shoot her with a water gun. This is rediculous. This is pathetic. She'll kill me. He gets up fast. When he's just under Angela's room he gets his squirt gun from under his shirt. BRIAN VO: What if she's not dressed. O my god. I am out of here. He does go up one more step and peaks into Angela's room. Angela is sitting at her desk reading a book. Her back is turned to Brian. He gets up two more steps and then he points his gun. BRIAN: Umm, hi. Angela frightens and turns around fast. At that moment Brian shoots her in her face. But he also scares of Angela's frightened face and looses his balance. He falls into her room. Angela's looking not frightened anymore, but more angry and astonished. Her face is dripping. Brian gets up as fast as he can. BRIAN: [fast] I know I shouldn't be doing this, but this shooting thing is really getting to me and Rayanne told me - ANGELA: [still looking amazed] Brian, shut up. BRIAN: [sighs] O.K. I was wrong. Just kill me now. ANGELA: [laughing a little] It's o.k. Brian. You just scared the hell out of me. BRIAN: [still uncomfortable] This is not me. I don't know what is posessing me, but this is not me. ANGELA: I know that. She dries her face with a t-shirt that was on the floor. ANGELA: So, where's your paper. He gets it out of his pocket and hands it to her. Angela signs it and hands it back to him. ANGELA: Sit down. Brian sits down on the chair by the mirror, where all of Angela's make up stuff is. Again the "I want to believe" postcard is clearly visible. Angela sits down on the bed. ANGELA: So you listened to Rayanne's advise. Brian looks embarassed. ANGELA: She *was* right, you know. BRIAN: About what? ANGELA: Come on, Brian. [sighs] We make terrible friends, you know that. BRIAN: We get along better than we used to. ANGELA: [sighs] Sure. [pauses] BRIAN: What? ANGELA: I don't know. [pauses] First the letter. Then the haemorraghe thing. She stands up and walks around the room. She picks up Brian's gun that is lying on the floor near the open window. She walks to him and hands him the gun. He takes it. His hand touches hers. He looks up to her and they both look serious in each other's eyes for a couple of seconds. Then Angela lets go of the gun and gets back to her bed. ANGELA: [confused voice] I just want to be friends with you. [VO] That really was what I wanted. To believe. And to feel. [aloud] Real friends. BRIAN: [gets up] I should go. Before your parents know I'm here. Angela nods. She's still looking kind of confused. Brian walks to the window. BRIAN: Chase - Angela looks up to him. BRIAN: [smiling] I think we are. Friends. [pauses] The fact that you didn't throw me down the ladder as fast as you could, proves that. Angela smiles. BRIAN: But you *can't* just put up a ladder to an open window at night. Not even in Three Rivers. Brian climbs through the window on the ladder. Angela walks to him. When he gets down, she waves and closes the window. She watches him cross the street. Then she walks away from the window. She falls on her bed and puts her head under a pillow. TO BE CONTINUED... read on in part 2 and part 3 or back to the introduction. 104.1 a so-called x-file, part 2 SCENE 1 Interior F.B.I. office. Mulder is sitting at his desk, reading something. He looks tired. Text appears: F.B.I. Headquarters, Washington D.C. June 12, 12.30 a.m. Scully enters. Mulder looks up. MULDER: Why am I still here? SCULLY: Because of this. Scully hands him a fax. We can see that it's from Pittsburgh Zoo. Mulder reads it. MULDER: So, one more mysterious fever patient who didn't make it. SCULLY: And they found oil on the bear. MULDER: Where did you get this? SCULLY: After Skinner told us to drop the case, I called Alison to tell her we were no longer investigating it. She was very disappointed. Then I told her to let me know, when she heard of similar cases. MULDER: And so soon. Scully gets an envelope with plane tickets out of her pocket and holds it up to Mulder. SCULLY: We're going to Pittsburgh. Mulder looks surprised and then he gets up. They leave the office. SCENE 2 Interior Chase kitchen. Angela is sitting at the kitchen table eating pancakes. Text appears: Three Rivers, Pennsylvania. June 12, 7.55 a.m. Angela is wearing a short summer dress. She is smiling. ANGELA VO: So, Brian and I are friends. [pauses] That's a start. Patty enters the kitchen. She is in a hurry. PATTY: Honey, Danielle is not going to school today. She has a fever. Could you tell Brian not to come over for the saxophone lessons tonight? ANGELA: Sure. PATTY: Thank you. Patty rushes out of the kitchen again. Angela is putting more syrup on her pancakes. Graham comes in, rubbing his eyes. GRAHAM: It's too hot to hurry. ANGELA: Mom would die if she couldn't. Graham poors some coffee in a mug. GRAHAM: Your mom and I decided to do a barbecue this saturday. And your mom thought it would be a good idea to ask - ANGELA: [interrupting] Jordan, right? [annoyed] Dad, why? GRAHAM: What's the big deal, Angela? I met him, your mother met him. He was here when you got back from the hospital. We *think* he's o.k. [pauses] But if you keep hiding him from us, we might be thinking otherwise pretty soon. ANGELA: [sighs] I don't know. GRAHAM: You think he doesn't like us? Your other friends don't seem to. Or are they just being polite and are you trashing us when we're out of ear distance. ANGELA: *No!* [sighs] You know dad, Jordan is this kind of person, who you don't bring to a barbecue your parents give. Graham frowns. Angela looks thoughtful. ANGELA VO: Being around Jordan *and* my parents at the same time is what I have nightmares of. Like I have to develop a multiple personality syndrome right at the spot to survive. [pauses] It happened one time, when I got back from the hospital. But again? And a barbecue? It just doesn't make sense. GRAHAM: Come on, Angela. Say yes and your mother is not going to bother you for a long time. ANGELA: Like that's really possible. [sighs and gets up] O.K. I'll ask him. GRAHAM: Thank you. And one more thing, your grandparents are coming over for dinner tonight. ANGELA: [disapproving, putting her plate in the sink] Really? Can't you cancel that? Danielle is sick. GRAHAM: That excuse didn't work. I'm sorry. Really. Angela nods and walks away. Grahams sits down and watches her leave. SCENE 3 Interior Liberty High hallway. The hallway is full with people - as usual -Angela is standing at her locker with the water gun in her hand. She's looking around for people who may shoot her. Then Jordan comes walking to her. He sees her water gun. JORDAN: Hi. ANGELA: [embarassed] Hi. JORDAN: So, you're in this shooting thing too? ANGELA: [fast] Well, yes. But Sharon and Rayanne kind of dragged me in to it. [pauses] How's rehearsal going? Before Jordan can say anything, Sharon appears and shoots at Angela. But instead of Angela, Jordan gets hit in the face. And Angela quickly shoots at Sharon and she hits her arm. ANGELA: Got you again, Cherski. Jordan is just standing there, a little overwhelmed by the sudden action. Angela is laughing at his dripping face. She dries his face with his the inside of his jacket. SHARON: I'm sorry, Jordan. But she pulled the same thing with me the other day. ANGELA: Only I didn't shoot your *boyfriend*. SHARON: [mumbling] I wonder how long he still is my boyfriend. ANGELA: What? SHARON: Nothing, gotta go. Bye. Sharon walks away. Jordan's face is still a little wet. He looks funny. Angela kisses him. She's smiling. ANGELA: I'm sorry about that. JORDAN: It's o.k. [pauses] Maybe I'd better get myself some gun too. Like for selfdefense. [pauses] Anyway, rehearsal's going pretty good. You want to come over tonight to the loft? To hear us? ANGELA: Yeah. I'd love to. JORDAN: I'll pick you up at eight then. Angela sees Rayanne sneaking up at them. ANGELA: Get down. At the same moment as she says this she pulls Jordan down and Rayanne misses them. Angela shoots back and hits Rayanne in her neck. RAYANNE: Shit. Angela and Jordan get up again. Jordan is smiling. ANGELA: [happy] Today is my lucky day. JORDAN: I gotta go back to the loft. See you tonight. He kisses her. ANGELA: [softly] Yeah, tonight. Jordan walks away and then Rayanne comes closer. RAYANNE: So, let me sign your list, Dirty Harry. Angela gets her list out of her pocket. Rayanne looks at her in surprise. RAYANNE: You shot Sharon? She's like impossible to sneak up to. ANGELA: [proud] I shot her twice. She still has to sign for the second time. Rickie comes walking to them. They see him coming, he puts his gun away. RICKIE: It's so great. The World Happiness Shooting is all over the place. I just had bio and Chavatal asked why no one had asked her to join. RAYANNE: [disapproving] The heat is definetely getting to everyone. RICKIE: Don't you think that's great? It's like everybody is giving up the serious mask that they're wearing. Like we can be the person we really are. RAYANNE: Deep thought, Rickie. The heat is *certainly* getting to you. ANGELA: No, Rickie is right. I thought about this - RAYANNE: Of course, Angela Chase and *not* giving anything thought is like penguins walking around the north pole. ANGELA: Shut up, Rayanne. [pauses] I mean, this is kind of like Halloween, but only better. This week we get to be the more immature part of ourselves. It's like playing with Barbies when you're thirteen. It's a lot of fun, but you're not supposed to have that fun. It's like forbidden. I mean I haven't had a squirt gun in my hands since I was eleven. RAYANNE: [to Rickie] She's lying. Or Brian Krakow gave her some shooting lessons. Angela smiles vaguely. RICKIE: Yeah. Just this morning I was walking into school and *splash* I got a wet face. Then I saw Brian from like an impossible distance. [pauses] He's really getting into this. The ladies room is probably the only place where you're safe from his attacks. RAYANNE: I wouldn't bet on that. The bell rings and Angela closes her locker. They walk down the hallway. SCENE 4 Exterior Pittsburgh Zoo. Mulder and Scully are standing in front of the polar bear space. It's the same spot where Danielle and her class were standing before. Two polar bears are swimming in the water. MULDER: That's what we should be doing. SCULLY: Don't tell me you like swimming. MULDER: When nobody is watching. SCULLY: Right. Somebody comes walking from behind. It's a young man, wearing safari shorts and a t-shirt with a rhinoceros print. He's looking a little bored. ROSS: I'm David Ross. MULDER: Hello, mr. Ross. We're agents Mulder and Scully. ROSS: Yeah, they told me. SCULLY: What can you tell us about the polar bear? ROSS: We found a little oil on the bear, it had a fever that increased by the hour and then the bear died. SCULLY: How high was his temperature when he died. ROSS: 104.1. SCULLY: That's not lethal, right? ROSS: No. MULDER: Can we see the bear? ROSS: The bear is already gone for destruction. Just in case he died of some dangerous bacteria. Mulder frowns to Scully. SCULLY: And the oil? ROSS: We sent that away to the University to examine it. SCULLY: Which one? ROSS: Pittsburgh University. Here in town. SCULLY: Can you give us the number of the person you sent it to. ROSS: I thought you would want to know that. Ross gets a piece of paper out of his pocket and gives it to Scully. She reads it and puts it away. MULDER: Were there any irregularities the night before you found the sick bear? ROSS: I wouldn't know. You'd have to check security for that. [pauses] Is there any more you want to know, I have other things to do. Mulder looks at Scully. SCULLY: No. You can go to your other things, mr. Ross. ROSS: Fine. [pauses] Since when does the F.B.I. investigate dead animals? MULDER: [slightly sarcastic] Since we found out that your polar bear might be attacked by aliens. Ross frowns and starts to walk away. MULDER: Just keep an eye on your big animals, mr. Ross. CUT to interior security office. About thirty small monitors are on one wall. They show parts of the zoo in black and white. A fifty year old man is sitting behind a desk, looking through some papers. Mulder is looking at the monitors. The security guy gets out a piece of paper. SEC. GUY: I found it here, mr. Mulder. Rosewood was on duty that night. At four a.m. he was doing his round. Near the polar bear section he heard some noise. He thought there was someone there, but he looked around and couldn't find anything. MULDER: That's it? SEC. GUY: Yes. You should know that we hear noises all the time during rounds. It's a zoo. MULDER: Can you give me mr. Rosewood's number? SEC. GUY: He's working right now, I can page him if you want to. MULDER: O.K. The security guy pages Rosewood. Scully comes in. SCULLY: I just called the University Chemistry Lab, they have no idea what it is, but *what* they found is completely the same as what we found in Washington. MULDER: Allright. SCULLY: And, guess what, the lab guys at the bureau found out that what we gave them is a derivative of the stuff we found on the so-called submarine. The oil we found earlier does not cristallizize when it encounters oxygen. The new stuff does. [pauses] It's impossible to get it back in the original, fluid state. Another security guy comes in, the office is getting a little crowded. It's Rosewood. He's about 35, tall and muscular. ROSEWOOD: What's the urgency. MULDER: Mr. Rosewood, we're federal agents Mulder and Scully. We'd like to ask some questions about your shift three nights ago. ROSEWOOD: Shoot. MULDER: In the report you wrote that you heard some noises near the polar bear section. ROSEWOOD: Yes. I thought I heard someone walking and I took a look, but couldn't find anything. I guess it was some animal noise, [smiling] the night is never completely silent around here. MULDER: If you wanted to break and enter the zoo, what would be the safest way? ROSEWOOD: To get locked in at night and sneak out when the zoo opens. Since the zoo is such a big place, that's not too hard. [pauses] But nothing was reported stolen that night. MULDER: [thoughtful] That's right. CUT to polar bear section. Mulder and Scully look around the place. SCULLY: It's awfully quiet today. MULDER: Would you go to a zoo with your kids when it's this hot? SCULLY: I guess not. MULDER: I think someone *was* here that night to throw the oil on the polar bear. [pauses] And if he waited till the next morning to get out, someone must have seen him. SCULLY: They *have* cameras at the entrance and exit. SCENE 5 Exterior Liberty High. Angela, Rickie and Rayanne are sitting on the grass in the shade of a tree. They're eating lunch. RICKIE: Maybe we should go to the pool this weekend. RAYANNE: Like everybody else in Three Rivers. RICKIE: It'll be fun. RAYANNE: Sure. ANGELA: [annoyed] You know, my parents are giving this barbecue on saturday and guess who they want me to ask over? RAYANNE: [enthousiastic] Us!! ANGELA: Jordan Catalano. RAYANNE: Well, if you'd get them to invite us to it will be one big happy barbecue. RICKIE: I love barbecues. It's a real Chase family kind of thing. ANGELA: *Rickie!* RAYANNE: But at the Chase's you won't get black meat and crappy salads. Rayanne and Rickie laugh. Angela just stares a bit. ANGELA: [not too loud] I can't just ask Jordan. RAYANNE: Why not? ANGELA: [sighs] Just because. RAYANNE: [loud, amazed look on her face] I got it. [pauses] The winner of *our* World Happiness Shooting poule gets to go to the Chase barbecue. I've got to tell Cherski. And shoot her. Rayanne gets up and walks away. Angela and Rickie are left in surprise. RICKIE: [to Angela, reassuring] Sharon will talk her out of it. Angela nods and stares away. ANGELA VO: It's not that I am afraid that something will *happen* when I'm alone with Jordan and my parents. It's just that I can't imagine it. It's the biggest "as if" in my life. RICKIE: Seen Brian the last couple of hours? Angela looks up from her thoughts. ANGELA: No. Why? RICKIE: I just expect him to pop up at any place with his precision gun. Angela smiles. SCENE 6 Interior Chase kitchen. Graham is cutting a head iceberg lettuce. On the counter are little bowls with all kinds of ingredients: tomatoes, boiled eggs, tuna, green olives. Angela comes in and sees the little bowls. She takes some olives ANGELA: Mmm, olives. [full mouthed] What are you making? GRAHAM: [in perfect French] Salade Niçoise. ANGELA: Fancy. What is it? GRAHAM: Salad from Nice. Nice is a city in the south of France, at the Mediterrean. This salad goes with the weather. Everything you see on the counter goes in it. And more. ANGELA: Good. Make sure you leave some olives for me. GRAHAM: Sure. Patty enters. Her face is red, she looks tired. PATTY: What are you making for dinner? ANGELA: [in lousy French] Salade Niçoise. PATTY: [sighs] I hope dad will eat it. GRAHAM: [little irritated] Come on Patty, I'm not going to make a first class diner when it's so hot. And anyway, it's good for his diet. PATTY: You're right. Graham takes a little pan of the stove and poors it in a mug. He gives it so Angela. GRAHAM: It's some clear soup. For your sister. Make sure she eats it. Angela takes it, gets a spoon out of a drawer and walks away. Patty opens the fridge and gets out a bottle of orange juice. CUT to Danielle's door. Angela opens it carefully. The room is dark and Danielle lies in her bed, awake, she's wearing a night gown. The sheets are on the floor. ANGELA: Hi. I have some clear soup for you. DANIELLE: [weak voice] I don't want that. ANGELA: [nice voice] If you don't eat it, you have to spent all the evening listening to grandma's charity adventures. Danielle smiles a little and gets up. She's looking pale and sweaty. Angela takes a chair and sits near her. Danielle takes the mug and takes a sip. DANIELLE: It's good. ANGELA: Dad made it. [pauses] How's your fever? DANIELLE: It's getting a bit higher every time I take my temperature. It's now 101.5. ANGELA: Shall I make you a new wet towel? DANIELLE: No. [pauses] I hate them. It makes your hair and your pillow all wet. ANGELA: [smiles] You're right. DANIELLE: How's the shooting going? ANGELA: Pretty good. I got Rayanne and Sharon today and didn't get shot myself. But I think Brian and Rayanne are at the top of our poule. He asked me to tell you to get well soon and that you'll get an extra lesson as soon as you're recovered. For a while they say nothing as Danielle drinks her soup. The she gives the mug to Angela. DANIELLE: I'm going to sleep some more. ANGELA: [gets up] O.K. DANIELLE: Won't you stay for a while? ANGELA: [happy, a little touched] Sure. Angela looks around the room and sees a Winnie the Pooh book lying at Danielle's desk. ANGELA: You want me to read you a story? DANIELLE: [a little embarassed and surprised] Well [pauses] yeah. Angela puts the mug on the floor and gets the book. The she sits down again. She looks through the book and finds a good story. Danielle turns on her side and looks happy at Angela. Angela smiles and starts to read. Thanks to A.A. Milne for the story. ANGELA: [in her best reading voice] Winnie-the-Pooh woke up suddenly in the middle of the night and listened. Then he got out of bed, and lit his candle, and stumped across the room to see if anybody was trying to get into his honey-cupboard, and they weren't, so he stumped back again, blew out his candle, and got into bed. Then he heard the noise again. 'Is that you, Piglet?' he said. But it wasn't. 'Come in, Christopher Robin!' he said. But Christopher Robin didn't. 'Tell me about it to-morrow, Eeyore,' said Pooh sleepily. But the noise went on. 'Worraworraworraworraworra,' said What-ever-it-was, and Pooh found that he wasn't asleep after all. As Angela tells the story Danielle closes her eyes and after a little while it's clear that she's fallen asleep. But Angela keeps reading on. She's really good at it. Then we cut to door opening Danielle's room and we see Patty peaking in, smiling. SCENE 7 Interior security office. The older security guy is still there. Mulder is looking at a monitor, rewinding a tape at low speed. Then the screen goes to normal. We see people walking into the zoo from up above. Scully comes in with two cans of soda. She hands one to him. SCULLY: Here. MULDER: [takes it] Thanks. [opens it and takes a sip] No one left the zoo during the first two hours it was open. And not much people came in too. Some old people, mothers with young children, a school class, that's it. SCULLY: [loud, pointing at the monitor] Look! MULDER: Bingo. Mulder freezes the video and on the monitor we recognize the Cigarette Smoking Man. SCULLY: I wonder what he is doing there. He is not going *out*. At that moment, the bear was already sick. MULDER: [to security guy] Can we get the tapes of all the cameras made after eleven a.m.? SEC. GUY: They're right there. He points at a metal cupboard, across the office. Mulder gets up and opens it. He gets out twentyfive tapes. MULDER: Can we watch this here? SEC. GUY: Sure, I don't mind. [pauses] There's another videoplayer. To save time. MULDER: Thanks. CUT to some time later. Scully and Mulder are both watching monitors. They're looking hot. Mulder is eating a popsicle. He freezes his monitor. MULDER: Here he is again. Walking down a lane near the polar bears. [to security guy] Can you tell me where this lane goes to? SEC. GUY: To some toilets. Mulders pushes play again and we see the Cigarette Smoking Man disappear. He hits fast forward and after a while we see him coming back. Mulder freezes the monitor again. MULDER: He needed to go to the bathroom. SCULLY: I don't think so.[looks carefully] He's got something in his pocket of his jacket. Do you see that? A piece of plastic is sticking out of the CSM's pocket. Mulder rewinds the tape to the CSM's ealier appearance and no plastic can be seen on there. MULDER: So he picked something up in the bathroom. He rewinds the tape some more, the CSM disappears and then we see a young girl with long hair walking down the lane towards the toilets. We can't see her face, 'cause she looks at the ground. SCULLY: I didn't see her coming back again. Mulder fast forwards the tape. We see the CSM coming and leaving and then we see the girl leaving. She's still looking at the ground. SCULLY: She was there when he was. [to security guy] Are there different toilets for men and women? SEC. GUY: Of course. SCULLY: She probably hasn't seen him. MULDER: But it is possible. SCULLY: We should find out who she is. MULDER: And check out the toilets. SCENE 8 Interior zoo toilets. Scully is in the ladiesroom looking around. She enters a stall and she notices some small hardened oil spots on the floor. A door slams. MULDER: [off screen] Nothing there. SCULLY: Here's some of the oil. Mulder comes to Scully and looks at the oil. MULDER: I guess the cleaning service couldn't get rid of it. SCULLY: But why is it here? This is doesn't make sense. MULDER: Maybe it does. Maybe someone came here at night hiding from Rosewood, who had heard something. He hid the remaining oil or whatever here and our smoking friend had to pick it up the other day. SCULLY: If he was here, the girl must have heard or seen him. MULDER: At least. SCULLY: [sighs] Let's watch some more video. SCENE 9 Chase dinner table. Graham, Patty, Vivian and Angela are sitting around the table. They have just finished. VIVIAN: Graham, this was wonderful. GRAHAM: Thank you. VIVIAN: But Chuck would have hated it. Good thing he didn't feel too well. PATTY: *Mom!* VIVIAN: O, you know how he is. His diet is on the road to nowhere, too. ANGELA: Can I be excused? PATTY: Why? ANGELA: Jordan is picking me up in fifteen minutes. PATTY: Where are you going? ANGELA: Just to the loft where Residue's rehearsing. [looks at Graham] Dad said it was o.k. I'll be back at ten. VIVIAN: So, now I'm going to meet the famous Jordan too. ANGELA: He's not coming in. VIVIAN: You *could* ask him in. ANGELA: *Grandma!* VIVIAN: Allright, allright. But I'd like to get an invitation for your wedding. Angela sighs. Graham nods at her. She leaves the table and walks up the stairs. SCENE 10 Interior loft. The band members are walking around. Angela is sitting at the side, Jordan next to her. He gets up. JORDAN: [to Angela] Here we go. He walks to the other players and they get their instruments. The drummer counts and then they start to play "I want to be sedated". Jordan is singing. It sounds real good. Angela is enjoying the music. ANGELA VO: This is enough. I think. Being the singer's girl. Shooting at my friends with squirt guns. Reading stories to Danielle. [pauses] But not having any ambitions probably makes me a real shallow person. [pauses] I should make that next year's project. CUT to Jordan and Angela sitting alone in the loft. Angela is trying to play an acoustic guitar. Jordan is putting her fingers right. JORDAN: No, no. An A-chord is like this. ANGELA: Like this? JORDAN: Yeah. And an E-chord is like this. He moves her fingers. JORDAN: Now, strum four times and then move to A again. Angela does like he tells her. It sounds clumsy. JORDAN: [laughing] You're a natural. ANGELA: Hey, I *had* pianolessons for one year. JORDAN: Sure. I can see why you quit. Angela strums the guitar and after a while the chord switches go rather decent. Then Jordan gets another acoustic guitar and plays some bluesy melody. After ten seconds Angela gets mixed up in the strings. ANGELA: I can't concentrate when you play all those little notes. JORDAN: Allright, then I'll take you home. Angela puts the guitar away. ANGELA: [apologizing voice] O.K., this is gonna sound real dumb. Jordan frowns at her. ANGELA: [sighs] My parents are giving a barbecue this saturday. And they wanted me to invite you. They kind of forced me to invite you, but I don't think - JORDAN: Cool. ANGELA: [surprised] What? JORDAN: I'll come. [pauses] I like your mom. ANGELA: [mumbling] That makes you the first. She smiles at him and gives him a kiss. Then they get up and leave the loft. SCENE 10 Exterior Angela's street. Angela is stepping out of Jordan's car. She closes the door and looks in one more time. She waves and then Jordan pulls up and drives away. As she watches Jordan leave, she notices a black van somewhere up the street. As she watches it, the van's lights turn on, it turns and drives away. She slowly walks up to the door, humming "I want to be sedated". The camera zooms out as she opens the door and enters. SCENE 11 Interior motel room. Mulder is sitting at a table, staring at the wall. Scully enters the room. Mulder looks up and rubs his eyes. SCULLY: I just got a call from the F.B.I. lab. You won't believe what they found. MULDER: Tell me. SCULLY: The oil found on the animals, is some kind of material that works in two ways. They managed to analyse it good enough to understand what it was before it crystallized. [pauses] If the material makes contact with an animal it first causes a fever. The animal weakens and when it's body temperature reaches 104.1 degrees an other material is released and that kills it. MULDER: What is the material? SCULLY: They don't know. All they can say is that there's a little lead in it. But there has to be more. The material released causes a sudden cardiac arrest. MULDER: O.K. So they throw this stuff on the animals - SCULLY: One more thing. They found out that not only oxygen causes crystallization, also temperatures below 120 degrees. And if it is cristalized it looses its power. Certainly for those big animals. MULDER: So they brought the stuff in some kind of thermos bottle. SCULLY: But why killing these animals? MULDER: They're doing tests. They found this stuff or they created it and now they're testing it on animals. They remain silent for a couple of moments. Scully sits down on the bed. SCULLY: I'm going to bed. We can't do much tonight anymore. MULDER: And tomorrow up to the school in Three Rivers. We could visit those kids. Brian Krakow and Angela Chase. SCULLY: We should. [sighs] MULDER: What? SCULLY: That girl, Angela. She wrote me a letter and I never wrote back. [pauses] She reminds me so much of Melissa. It's like I can't take it or something. MULDER: What did she write? SCULLY: She thanked me for being there. Told a little bit about her life. That she hasn't got a clue to do with her life, but that she's fine with it. That she liked me. That she wanted to see me again someday. MULDER: Here's your chance. SCULLY: She probably hates me for not writing back. MULDER: You'll see. Scully nods and looks away. SCENE 12 Interior Chase house upstairs. Peaceful MSCL music is playing. Angela comes out of the bathroom, she's wearing sleeping shorts and a singlet. She gets in her room, closes the door and gets into bed. CUT to living room. Patty and Graham are watching t.v. Patty lies against Graham. He has his arm around her. CUT to Danielle's dark room. First we see the total room, then we zoom in to Danielle who is asleep, but moving her head and her arms. She's moaning a little. As we get closer we can see the sweat on her face and her frightened expression - although her eyes are closed. The moaning gets worse and drowns the music. It's a terrible sight. The screen fades to black. TO BE CONTINUED... read on in part 3 or back to part 1 or the introduction. 104.1 a so-called x-file, part 3 SCENE 1 Interior Chase house upstairs. Angela walks from her room to Danielle's, we hear some moaning. Text appears: Three Rivers, Pennsylvania. June 13, 4.15 a.m. Angela enters Danielle's room quietly and closes the door again. She sits on the bed and wakes Danielle. ANGELA: [softly] Danielle, wake up. You're having a nightmare. Danielle opens her eyes, but doesn't seem to see Angela. Angela picks up the wet towel from the floor and holds it to Danielle's head. Danielle is mumbling. DANIELLE: [barely hearable] That man [pauses] cigarette tranquillizer [sighs] can't tell you [sighs]. ANGELA: [stroking her head] Sssh, sssh. It's over. You're home. There's no man here. DANIELLE: [still weak voice] The zoo [sighs] can't go to the bathroom [pauses] that gun. ANGELA: [firm voice] Danielle, wake up. You're not dreaming anymore. I am here. There is no man. No gun. Danielle blinks her eyes and finally she notices Angela. ANGELA: The fever is giving you nightmares. But you're safe now. Graham enters the room. GRAHAM: [concerned] Is she allright? ANGELA: I guess so. She was having nightmares. GRAHAM: [to Danielle] How are you feeling, honey? DANIELLE: [weak voice] Tired. Danielle closes her eyes again. GRAHAM: Then go back to sleep again. We'll be here to look after you. [softly, to Angela] Go back to bed. You need your sleep. Angela nods and gives Graham a little hug. He smiles. Angela walks out of the room. Graham sits down by Danielle, holding her hand. SCENE 2 Exterior Angela's street. Angela is standing behind a tree in front of Brian's house. Her backpack is at her feet, she has the gun in her hand. ANGELA VO: I can't imagine I'm doing this. [pauses] And how good it feels. Then we hear [off screen] a door slam and Bereniece's voice. BERENIECE: [off-screen, yelling] We won't be home for dinner, honey. BRIAN: [off-screen, irritated] Like that's new. Then Brian walks by Angela's tree without noticing her. ANGELA: Hey Krakow. BRIAN: [irritated] What? As he turns around Angela shoots him right in the face. His irritated look gets worse. Angela doesn't know to laugh or not. But she can't really hold it. ANGELA: [laughing] The shooting isn't over yet. BRIAN: [sighs] I know. I'll sign your paper in the bus. Which we're going to miss if we don't hurry. They start to walk rather fast. ANGELA: What's the reason for this depression act. BRIAN: It's not an act. ANGELA: [casual] Everybody is going crazy over your amazing shooting skills. BRIAN: [smiling, proud] Really? ANGELA: See, it's an act. BRIAN: [irritated again] Just shut up. ANGELA: Come on, Brian. It's too hot to be depressed. [pauses] But really, you're probably going to win the shooting. BRIAN: Sure. Then he sees the bus coming around the corner. BRIAN: Come on, run! They run to the bus and they reach it. Out of breath. They get in the bus, laughing and nearly fall in to the seats. The bus drives away. SCENE 3 Interior Chase kitchen. Patty and Graham are drinking coffee. They look tired. The phone rings. Patty picks it up. PATTY: Hello. -- Oh hi Rayanne, Angela left already. -- Yes, that's true. But Danielle's sick and if she doesn't get better, we might cancel it. --Hold on a sec., Rayanne. [puts hand over phone, to Graham] It's Rayanne. She asks if they could all come over saturday, for the barbecue. GRAHAM: Why didn't Angela ask? PATTY: Rayanne said that Angela thought it would be too much trouble. What do you think? She says that they will all bring food and drinks along. GRAHAM: Who is they? PATTY: Just Angela's friends: Rickie, Sharon, maybe Brian. GRAHAM: [smiling] Fine with me. PATTY: [in phone] Rayanne, sorry you had to wait. -- But it's o.k. -- Sure, it'll be fun. -- Bye. Patty puts the phone down and sighs. PATTY: I don't know why I agreed on that. GRAHAM: [smiling] Maybe you don't feel too comfortable around Jordan Catalano. Patty blushes. She looks around for something. Then she gets her keys and her bag. She kisses Graham. PATTY: [fast] I got to go. Patty leaves the kitchen. Graham gets up, humming and poors himself another cup of coffee. SCENE 4 Interior Liberty High hallway. Angela and Rickie are standing at Angela's locker. Rayanne comes running in. Angela and Rickie point their guns, but Rayanne doesn't shoot. She looking extremely happy. RAYANNE: [to Angela] You are *so* going to thank me. ANGELA: [surprised] Why? RAYANNE: You're not going to be alone with Jordan and your parents at the barbecue. ANGELA: [sighs] Come on, Rayanne. I'm positive my parents don't like to have the winner of the shooting over for the barbecue. RAYANNE: [smiling] Did you ask? ANGELA: [excusing voice] No. RAYANNE: Well, *I* did. ANGELA: [mouth open wide] You *what*? RAYANNE: I thought it would be nice for you to have some friends over at the barbecue. [pauses] But since you are like incapable of asking these things, I thought I wouldd. [to Rickie] I had such a nice telephone conversation with Patty, you wouldn't believe it. ANGELA: [still can't believe it] What did she say? RAYANNE: I said we all would bring some food or drinks along. Then she said it was o.k. ANGELA: Who is we? RAYANNE: Oh, just me, Rickie, Sharon and [pointing at Brian, who's coming down the hallway] mr. Contractkiller. [loud, to Brian] Hey, Krakow, wanna go to a party? Brian comes to them. Angela is looking a little embarassed at the whole situation. RAYANNE: You're invited. Saturday, 6 a.m. BRIAN: Where? RAYANNE: At the Chase's. Brian looks at Angela in surprise. She closes her locker and starts to walk away. ANGELA: I don't want to talk about it. Angela walks away. Rickie, Rayanne and Brian watch her leave. The bell rings. SCENE 5 Exterior elementary school. Mulder and Scully get out of a blue car. Text appears: St. Mary school, Three Rivers, Pennsylvania. 9.15 a.m. They walk to the entrance and enter the school. CUT to interior school. They walk through the small school, looking into classrooms. Then a fifty year old concierge walks up from behind. Scully and Mulder turn around. CONCIERGE: [firmly] Excuse me, can I help you? SCULLY: Yes. [shows I.D.] We're federal agents Scully and Mulder. We're here to see miss Mitry. CONCIERGE: [impressed by the i.d.] Come with me. The concierge walks through the hallway, Mulder and Scully follow him. At the third door he stops, knocks and signals the teacher. The same woman as we saw in the very beginning steps out of the classroom. She doesn't seem to like being called out of her class. MULDER: Miss Mitry? MITRY: [a little irritated] Yes. MULDER: We're federal agents Mulder and Scully. We're here to ask you some questions about last monday, when you went to the zoo. MITRY: [indifferent] O.K. Scully gets out a print of the videotape picture showing Danielle walking to the toilets. It's almost impossible to recognize her, it's a bad print from a bad tape. And you can't see her face. SCULLY: Excuse for the quality, but do you recognize this girl? Mitry takes a careful look. MITRY: Sure, it's Danielle. SCULLY: She's in your class. MITRY: Yes. SCULLY: Can we see her? MITRY: No. [pauses] She's at home. She's been sick for three days now. Since the trip to the zoo. SCULLY: She's sick? MITRY: [offended] Yes. What has she done? MULDER: [impatient] She has stolen lipstick at the mall, that's why the F.B.I. is at your school. SCULLY: Can you give me her address? CONCIERGE: [fast] I'll have it in a second. SCULLY: [to Mitry] Thank you for your time, miss Mitry. [to concierge] Let's go. They hurry away, Mitry looks at them without a clue. SCENE 6 Interior car. Mulder is driving fast. Scully is looking at a little piece of paper. SCULLY: Turn left. And at the second street at the right. [pauses] I can't believe this. MULDER: You just can't escape from the Chase family. SCULLY: I hope this is purely coincidental. MULDER: Of course it is. [pauses] Here we are. Mulder stops the car and they get out. They hurry up the driveway. Mulder rings the bell. After a few moments Graham opens the door. He's surprised. GRAHAM: Uhh, hello again - SCULLY: [interrupting] Your daughter Danielle is sick, right? GRAHAM: [confused] Yes. SCULLY: How is she? GRAHAM: She has a fever. She's asleep now. SCULLY: We need to get her to a hospital. GRAHAM: Why? SCULLY: She has been exposed to something that caused the fever. She may be in danger. Graham looks really confused and concerned. GRAHAM: Come in, she's upstairs. Mulder and Scully enter the house. Graham hurries up the stairs, Scully follows him. Mulder stays downstairs, They enter Danielle's room - it's still dark there. She's asleep, but her face is real sweaty. SCULLY: What's her temperature? GRAHAM: 103.2. I took it one hour ago. SCULLY: Take it again. Graham takes the thermometer and wakes Danielle. He puts it in Danielle's mouth. GRAHAM: Easy honey, just lie down. SCULLY: Did you give her any antipyretic? GRAHAM: No. SCULLY: Do you have any? GRAHAM: I think so. SCULLY: You'd better get it. Graham leaves the room and Scully gets closer to Danielle. She strokes her head. Danielle looks without seeing. Scully looks concerned. SCULLY: Everything's gonna be allright. Scully takes the thermometer out of Danielle's mouth. It's on 103.4. Graham gets back in. He gives a small bottle of pills to Scully. She looks at the label. GRAHAM: This is all I've got. It's for adults. SCULLY: That's not the point now. Could you get her up? Graham lifts Danielle, so that she sits up. Scully takes out two pills and gives them to Graham. He takes them and puts one in Danielle's mouth and he poors a little water in her mouth. GRAHAM: Swallow it, honey. Danielle does as she's told and Graham gives her the other pill. Then Mulder comes in. MULDER: I called an ambulance and told them in the hospital what to expect. GRAHAM: [real concerned] What is going on? MULDER: You heard about the polar bear that died, here in the zoo? Graham nods. MULDER: Danielle touched something at the zoo that caused the bear's death and her fever. SCULLY: The only problem is that what she touched is unknown material and we have no idea how to stop it. GRAHAM: But she's going to be allright? SCULLY: I don't know, mr. Chase. SCENE 7 Exterior Chase house. An ambulance is on the driveway, two paramedics are carrying a brancard with Danielle on it out of the house. Scully walks along with them. Mulder and Graham follow. The paramedics enter the ambulance with the brancard. Graham gets in and looks back at Scully and Mulder. Graham's POV. SCULLY: We'll meet you at the hospital, mr. Chase. Mulder and Scully's POV. The ambulance doors close and the ambulance speeds away. At the end of the street the sirens go on. Then Mulder's phone rings. He gets in out of his pocket. MULDER: Hello. It's the Cigarette Smoking Man. As they talk the shots go from Mulder (in front of the Chase house) to the CSM (interior office, holding a cigarette). CSM: Hello, agent Mulder. MULDER: [recognizes the voice, angry] What do you want? CSM: [calm] No, what do *you* want, agent Mulder. [pauses] The girl is going to die, unless you find a cure pretty soon, right? MULDER: [real pissed] What did you do to her? CSM: What I did doesn't matter, but I guess she's going to reach 104.1 rather fast. [pauses] The cure is nearer than you think, agent Mulder. Then a black van suddenly pulls up. Mulder sees it and runs to the car. He puts the phone in his pocket. MULDER: [to Scully] Come on! They get in the car and drive away, following the black van. Mulder's driving. He gets out his phone. MULDER: [in phone] What's the cure? CSM: I think you're near. MULDER: How can I trust you? CSM: Why would I have called you? The *girl* doesn't need to die. CSM puts the phone down. So does Mulder, but he's angry. MULDER: [to Scully] It was him. The cure is in the van. I hope. The black van races through the streets of Three Rivers. Mulder and Scully are right behind it, but due to the other cars, they can't pass the van. After a minute of high speed car chase, Mulder gets beside the van. Scully pulls down her window and points her gun. The van driver sees it, but he's not going to stop. The driver is the same guy as the guy who met the CSM in the parking garage. Mulder tries to drive the van off the street. They're in a street with shops. He succeeds. The van get to the side of the road. But the man who drove it gets out immediately and runs away, before Mulder and Scully even get out of the car. Mulder runs after him and catches up on him. He jumps on him from the back and they both fall to the ground. MULDER: F.B.I. You're under arrest. Mulder searches the driver, but he has nothing on him. No gun, no medicine. They walk back to the van. Mulder has his gun tot the man's back. Scully is already searching it. Some people are standing and looking at them. MULDER: Where is the cure? DRIVER: [serious] I tell you if you let me walk. MULDER: In your dreams. DRIVER: You can't afford this, Mulder. MULDER: O.K. I'll let you go. Where is it? DRIVER: A small metal box. In the glove compartiment. They've reached the van. Mulder is still holding his gun to the man. MULDER: [to Scully] It's in the glove compartiment. Scully gets in the van and a few seconds later she comes out with a metal box. She opens it. The box is filled with a piece of green foam. In it is a glass tube with some numbers on it and blue liquid. Scully looks at it carefully. SCULLY: What is it? DRIVER: The little girl's life. [pauses] But you've got not much time left. Mulder pushes the guy away. He falls to the ground, but gets up and gets in his van. MULDER: [to Scully] To the hospital. SCENE 8 Interior hospital room. Danielle's is lying is some kind of bath. Wires are attached from monitors to her body. Her head rests on a pillow. Her eyes are closed. A doctor is standing there. So are Patty and Graham. Patty is crying. SCULLY: What's her temperature? DOCTOR:: [points at a monitor] 103.95. The ride here made her fever a little worse, but she's stable now for five minutes. We've put her in this bath to make sure she's not going to a higher fever, as you [nods to Mulder] told us. But I'd like to know why that's so dangerous. As he says this. The digits on the screen go ot 104.00. Scully gets the tube out of the box and hands it to the doctor. SCULLY: Inject this. The doctor frowns and doesn't take the tube. SCULLY: We don't have much time left. At 104.1 she dies. Patty and Graham frighten. Scully looks at the doctor, who's still doing nothing. DOCTOR:: No one dies at 104.1. [pauses] And I'm not going to inject something I don't know. Not in this hospital. Then Mulder gets out his gun and points it to the doctor. The doctor frightens like hell. MULDER: At this moment, we know more than you. Step back and get us an injection needle. [to Graham and Patty] You've got to trust us. Patty in tears, nods. From a small table the doctor gets a sterilized injection needle and gives it to Scully. Mulder puts the gun down. SCULLY: Thank you. I am a doctor too. She fills the injection needle with the blue liquid and then walks over to Danielle. She gets her arm out of the water and injects the liquid. As she does this the temperature digits go up to 104.05. She injects all of the liquid and then puts the arm back in the water. Scully steps back and looks (like they all do) at the temperature digits. After a few moments it goes down to 104.00, then with long pauses to 103.95 and 103.90. The doctor doesn't believe it. Scully looks relieved. Patty and Graham hold Danielle's hands and she opens her eyes for a second. PATTY: It's o.k. sweetheart. GRAHAM: [realizing] We forgot to get Angela. I should get her. SCULLY: No, you'll stay here. I'll get her. Agent Mulder will explain what happened. Mulder frowns at her. SCULLY: What's her school? GRAHAM: Liberty High, it's on JFK avenue. SCULLY: I'll be right back. Scully leaves the hospital room, looking at the temperature digits one more time, it's on 103.65. SCENE 9 Exterior Liberty High. Angela is sitting with Sharon at the steps. Angela has a wet spot on her t-shirt. She gives Sharon back her shooting list. Two water gun lie in front of them. SHARON: So how many have you shot? ANGELA: Six. SHARON: Me too. ANGELA: Brian's got eight. SHARON: Rayanne nine. ANGELA: [sighs] It's like impossible to shoot anyone anymore. It's like they're all hiding or something. SHARON: I think they *are*. ANGELA: [whispering, looking to the ground] Rayanne is sneaking up at us behind this wall. I heard her bag. On three we get up and shoot her. O.K.? SHARON: [whispering] O.K. ANGELA: [whispering] One [pauses] two [pauses, loud] three! They both get up and lean over the wall to shoot Rayanne. Rayanne is there and nearly gets a heart attack. They shoot her and then burst out in laughter. ANGELA: [laughing] Your bag gives you away. Rayanne gets up and sits on the wall. RAYANNE: *Man.* Krakow's got nine too. I thought I'd shoot you both and be the total winner, but I guess not. SHARON: The day isn't over yet. You've got till midnight. ANGELA: So do we. [pauses] We've got seven now. *I* can beat nine. Then Scully comes walking up the steps. Angela sees her before Scully sees Angela. ANGELA: [happy] Agent Scully. Scully comes to them. Sharon and Rayanne look at her in surprise. SCULLY: [little uncomfortable] Hi Angela. ANGELA: Why are you here? SCULLY: Something happened with Danielle. She's in the hospital. ANGELA: [scared] Is she o.k.? SCULLY: Yes, she's going to be allright. I'm here to pick you up. [pauses] Let's go. Angela gets up and gets her bag. Scully starts to walk away. Angela turns around. ANGELA: [to Rayanne and Sharon, hesitating] I don't know if I'm going to be at the festival tonight. RAYANNE: That's o.k. [impatient] Go now, go! Rayanne and Sharon's POV. Angela walks with Scully away. CUT to parking lot. Angela and Scully get in the car. ANGELA: But the fever is going away now? SCULLY: Yes. ANGELA: Thank god. Scully puts the key in the egnition, but doesn't start the car. SCULLY: Angela? Angela looks up. SCULLY: [sighs] I'm sorry I didn't write you back. ANGELA: [uncomfortable] Oh, that's o.k. SCULLY: No, it's not. I liked your letter, but somehow I couldn't write back. Like a mental block or something. [pauses] ANGELA: I know. [pauses] You know, sometimes I get so caught up in my own thoughts, that it's like impossible to say them out loud or something. Or write them down. [pauses] When I was thirteen, my mother gave me a diary. But I barely wrote in it. [some what laughing] I guess "mental block" could be my Indian name. Scully smiles. After a few moments she turns on the engine. SCULLY: [smiling] I'd still like to make it up to you. Angela looks at her. SCULLY: [uncertain] Would you like to come over to Washington for a couple of days this summer? I could show you the F.B.I. building, we could have fun. ANGELA: [amazed, mouth open wide] That's fantastic. [pauses, smiling] I'd love to. SCULLY: [smiling] Allright. Let's go and see your sister. She turns on the engine and they drive away, both smiling. SCENE 10 Interior hospital room. Danielle's lying in a normal bed. She's awake. Patty and Graham are with her. They look beter than before. Angela comes in. Graham and Patty look up, happy to see her. Angela walks to the bed and looks at Danielle. ANGELA: Hi. DANIELLE: Hi. ANGELA: [smiling] I can't win the shooting anymore. Because of you. DANIELLE: Well, but you get to to the barbecue anyway, right? Angela smiles and looks at Patty and Graham. GRAHAM: Did agent Scully tell you what happened? ANGELA: Yes. GRAHAM: Do you believe it? ANGELA: [surprised] Of course! GRAHAM: [reassuring] It *is* a weird story. SCENE 11 Interior hospital cafeteria. Mulder and Scully are having a soda. MULDER: I just got a call from Skinner. He told us to get back to Washington. SCULLY: Of course. They say nothing for a few moments. MULDER: I don't know why they were testing the stuff on big animals, if they had the serum already. SCULLY: Maybe the serum only works for humans or for small creatures. MULDER: The aliens I saw were small. SCULLY: Like Danielle's size, right? MULDER: Right. [pauses] So they needed to test the limits of the materials killing capacity. To create a serum for bigger life forms than 11 year olds. SCULLY: They tried the strongest life forms on earth. Which means that it is even for them impossible to do vivisection on elephants and polar bears. MULDER: Or they just went to the zoo, because that was easier and to see if they could get away with it. SCULLY: [sighs] And they can. MULDER: [after a while] Not forever. SCENE 12 Exterior festival. A stage is put on some kind of sports field. It's evening, nearly dark. There are a lot of people. Residue is playing. Jordan is the new singer. Rayanne and Angela are standing near the stage. They're singing along. When the song is over, the crowd applauds and Rayanne and Angela are screaming. RAYANNE: [yelling] This is *so* amazing. ANGELA: [yelling] The rehearsals really helped. The Residues leave the stage, only Jordan remains. He gets an acoustic guitar and steps up to the microphone. He looks more secure than in real life. JORDAN: This is the last one. Thank you all for being here. The crowd gets quiet. Jordan looks at Angela and she smiles at him. Then he starts to play "Red" all alone. It's beautiful. Angela is melting at the spot. Rayanne is smiling. When the song is done the crowd applaudes even louder. Angela has tears in her eyes. Rayanne puts an arm around her. Jordan smiles at Angela and then he leaves the stage at the back. SCENE 13 Exterior Chase backyard. Graham is preparing the barbecue with Brian. Patty is putting plates and stuff on a real big white plastic table. Rickie and Sharon are helping her. Jordan is playing guitar on the grass. He plays some undefinable song and Danielle is singing it with him. Angela lies on the grass on her stomach. She's looking happy. ANGELA VO: This looks like one of those feel-good commercials for life insurances or something. Or a photo out of a Jehova's Witnesses brochure. [pauses] A plane is going to crash here any minute. Then Rayanne enters the backyard. She's carrying three bottles of coke. PATTY: Hi, Rayanne. RAYANNE: I'm not late, am I? PATTY: No, no. Give me those bottles, I'll put them in the fridge. Rayanne hands the bottles to Patty. She walks over to Angela. RAYANNE: [softly] I can't believe this. ANGELA: [laughing a little] Me neither. [pauses] Maybe I'm hallucinating. RAYANNE: Yeah, like those things in the desert. ANGELA: What? Cactusses? RAYANNE: No, idiot. [pauses] Fata morgana's. ANGELA: I never heard of that. RAYANNE: Bet you never been to the desert either. ANGELA: Like you have, Livingstone. RAYANNE: Well, I *have* driven through Death Valley once. They both laugh. Patty comes to them. PATTY: [to Angela] There's someone here to see you. Angela frowns, but gets up and goes in the house. CUT to interior kitchen. Scully stands in the kitchen. ANGELA: Agent Scully. SCULLY: Hi Angela. [pauses] We're going back to Washington. ANGELA: Can't you stay for the barbecue? I'm sure that's allright. SCULLY: I know. Your dad invited us yesterday, but we really got to get back. [pauses] I talked to your mother and she says it's o.k. for you to come over for a week or so this summer. ANGELA: [exited] Cool. SCULLY: Call me when summerbreak starts. ANGELA: I will. SCULLY: And keep an eye on your sister. If the fever comes back, go immediately to the doctor and call me. And if she wants to talk to you about what happened, be there to listen. She's been through a lot these these. Angela nods. SCULLY: O.K. I'm going. Agent Mulder is waiting in the car. Angela steps up to her and hugs her. ANGELA: Thank you for saving Danielle. Scully says nothing, a little surprised by the hug, but smiling. Angela lets go. They walk to the living room and Angela opens the door. ANGELA: Bye, agent Scully. SCULLY: It's Dana. ANGELA: [smiling] Bye, Dana. SCULLY: Bye. See you soon. Scully walks away and Angela watches her get in the car and leave. She waves as the car leaves. Then she closes the door. SCENE 14 Exterior Chase backyard. The table is full with plates, glasses, food etc. Everybody's eating and talking. RICKIE: This really good, mr. Chase. They all nod and mumble. GRAHAM: Well, I only put the meat on the barbecue. It's that simple. ANGELA: But you did spend all day in the kitchen with herbs, sauces and marinades. GRAHAM: [apologizing] Hey, I own a restaurant. I have a reputation. DANIELLE: Hey, who won the shooting? Sharon reaches under her chair to get an envelope. SHARON: [oscar-show voice] I've got the winner right here. Danielle starts to drum on the table. Sharon opens the envelope. She gets out a piece of paper. SHARON: And this year's winner of the World Happiness Shooting, poule A, is [dramatic pause] Brian Krakow. With eleven hits. They all applaude. Brian sure feels uncomfortable. GRAHAM: So, what the prize? SHARON: Actually the prize was going to be a seat at this barbecue. But since we're *all* here, that's not a real prize anymore. [pauses] So, you just get the honour and this certificate. She hands him the certificate, which reads Winner World Happiness Shooting 1995 - poule A: BRIAN KRAKOW. Then all their names are there. RAYANNE: Hey, Krakow. Where did you get the last two ones? Angela wasn't at school anymore and I was hiding. BRIAN: [casual] O, that was easy. I just walked into the ladies room and there were Sharon and Rickie. So I shot them. [apologizing, to Patty and Graham] That's not what I usually do. [pauses, to Sharon] So, if there's not any prize, what's that package under your chair. Sharon and Rayanne give him a look from hell. Sharon recovers and gets the wrapped gift from under her chair. SHARON: We *did* buy something. [to Brian] Only not for you. [to everybody]. There is someone here - RAYANNE: Cut out the crap, let me do this. [to Danielle, who sits right in front of her] You have been through a lot this week and that wasn't much fun for you. Since we don't want you to go to the zoo anymore, we brought the zoo here. [pauses] Well sort of. [pauses] It's from all of us. Even from Brian, although he doesn't know yet. If you feel to mature for it, you can always give it to me. Danielle looks surprised and then Sharon hands her the gift. She tears the paper away and reveals a very cute Winnie the Pooh bear. She looks amazed and happy. DANIELLE: Gee, thanks a lot. RAYANNE: Well, it's the least we could do. [pauses] If you hadn't been sick, we would have never known what a great bedtime reader Angela is. Now we never have to worry about being not able to sleep anymore. ANGELA: *Rayanne!* RICKIE: Yeah, you should get your license as fast as you can. Then you can do rounds. ANGELA: [to Rickie and Rayanne, quasi-angry] Shut up. I won't turn sixteen before the end of august. So I guess you'll have to wait a *very* long time, before I come pulling up your driveways with The Grimm Brothers in the backseat. GRAHAM: Allright, you all. I'd suggest we'd eat some more, before we start killing each other over bedtime reading. He gets up and walks over to the barbecue. Angela gets a bottle of coke and poors some glasses. When she gets to Rayanne's she whispers in her ear with an evil voice. ANGELA: [to Rayanne] *Me*. Reading bedtime stories. To *you*. [short pause] Not before you're in a mental institution. Camera pulls back to get an overview of the table. They're all talking again. SCENE 15 Exterior Angela's street. It's dark. Jordan and Angela stand by his car. They're standing close. ANGELA: [whispering] So, did you have a good time? JORDAN: [softly] Yeah. ANGELA: [smiling] So, you wanna take me for a long ride with the top down tomorrow? JORDAN: [smiling] Well, yeah. ANGELA: [wicked smile] And eat lots of ice cream in some stupid town we never heard of? JORDAN: Whatever. ANGELA: Be here at eleven? JORDAN: Allright. She gets on her toes and kisses him. He gets his arms around her and kisses her back. Then we hear a door slam off screen. CUT to Chase front door. Rayanne and Rickie come out. RAYANNE: That's enough. We need to get home *before* Thanksgiving. Angela and Jordan let go of each other. Angela is smiling. JORDAN: [softly] See you tomorrow. ANGELA: Yeah. Rayanne and Rickie reach the car and kiss Angela on the cheek. RAYANNE: The barbecue was great. We should do this more often. ANGELA: [teasing] Well, you can always call my mother. Jordan gets in the car. So do Rickie and Rayanne. RAYANNE: Bye. RICKIE: Bye. ANGELA: Bye. MSCL music starts. Angela watches them drive away. Then she turns around and takes her time to do a little dance before she gets back to the house. CUT to interior Chase house. Angela enters. Patty and Graham sit on the couch. ANGELA: It was really good. Thank you. GRAHAM: [smiling] It's what we do. ANGELA: I'm going to bed. Goodnight. She kisses them both. GRAHAM: Goodnight. PATTY: Goodnight, honey. CUT to Chase upstairs. Angela peaks into Danielle's room. She's asleep. The Winnie the Pooh bear is lying on her pillow. Angela closes the door and gets to her room. ANGELA VO: I guess the feel-good commercial doesn't end today. Angela sits down in front of her mirror. She smiles into the mirror. Music starts playing, it's "Doubled up" by Heather Nova. It's a small kind of song. MUSIC: I saw a mountain from higher above, I held your hand and I was doubled up in love. Big sky above me, a river inside me and I'm doubled up in love. Feels good it feels like poetry don't ask me to explain it just feels good, like poetry, I'm doubled up again. The camera goes to her make-up table where the yellow the squirt gun lies and then up again to the mirror with Angela's face and on the edge the postcard she got from Mulder and Scully: "I want to believe". Then she stands up and turns the lights off. Angela walks to the window, opens it more and leans out. She looks at the stars, there are many. And then the screen slowly fades to black. THE END back to part 1, part 2 or the introduction.
